FROM CAVES TO COLOSSEUMS

reproducible text, worksheets and tests ...$35.00

It hasn't skipped past us that you are trying to teach world history to young people who dye their hair magenta.  For that reason, we developed a world history unit that is written very informally, and if not humorously, then very light in its presentation.  The title, From Caves to Colosseums, more or less describes the period covered from prehistory to the fall of Rome.  The worksheets reinforce what they've read in the text pages, making it virtually impossible for information on the Egyptians, Greeks, and the rest of the early civilizations, to get past them.  The materials also include several tests to further reinforce what we couldn't get past them, but in fact, has.  Instead of using colored photos of King Tut's wardrobe or including yellow maps with squiggly red lines that show the boundaries of Mesopotamia prior to the Assyrian invasions, we've used cartoons.  That should give you a clue as to the approach we've taken with this unit in an effort to make it more readable for the young ones who hold planning sessions on grunge techniques for the clothes they wear.  We've heard from California teachers, who say it should be required in their state.

I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW I LIVED IN AN ECONOMY
reproducible tex
t, worksheets, tests and activities ...$18.00

In this unit we explain in simple terms what makes up an economy.  Most adults don't know this information or we wouldn't have a several trillion dollar national debt. But be that as it may, you'll find these materials range from heavy subjects like capitalism and communism to lighter ones such as how people are affected by advertising.  Cartoon drawings of cave people get some of the ideas across.  Just think of the variety of things from importing to buying on impulse that have something to do with the economy, and then just accept the fact that we've hit on them in this unit.   Exports, tariffs, and supply and demand are also explained. Half the worksheets relate back to the text; the other half relate to activities that tie the economy into their own lives.  Reading is about 4th grade, but content should appeal to older students.

SO THIS IS HOW MY STATE GOVERNMENT WORKS
reproducible text, worksheets and tests ...$15.00
These simplified materials do for students learning about state governments what You Mean This is What Goes on in Washington does for those studying the federal government.  Read on below to see what we we're talking about.

YOU MEAN THIS IS WHAT GOES ON IN WASHINGTON
reproducible text, worksheets and tests ... $25.00
We haven't met anyone since Thomas Jefferson died who has the slightest idea what is going on in Washington., but that didn't stop us from creating materials having to do with the federal government. Most of you would like to put the politicians on a continent that's drifting away from all of us, but that's a fantasy. These materials hit more at reality. Like the reality of the Bill of Rights, the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government, campaigning and elections, lobbying, how the chalupas that were lost in Iowa finally made it home, and numerous other topics related to the shenanigans going on in the federal government. Should your state have requirements that call for students to pass a test on the federal government, the tests should suffice. Text, worksheets, test and answer key.

H E P GLOSSARY
student glossary ... $10.00

In order for your students to get a full understanding of about 800 terms in the area of history, economics, and political science, they can use this glossary.  Such use should move them forward from not knowing they live on the North American continent to properly conducting themselves at an international summit conference or to thoroughly understanding the entire Wall Street Journal.  Now that we are done dreaming and lying, we will simply say that if there is something related to history, economics or political science in their textbooks, or on the news or in the newspaper, they will be able to use the glossary to look up the word.  The terms are defined in simple language, followed by an example of the word as it might be used in a sentence.  Think of the glossary as a simplified dictionary that can be used to guide them through social studies vocabulary.  Glossary is paperback sized, with a spiral binding.

H E P VOCABULARY SET
reproducibles ...$50.00
The first part of this set includes very basic terms related to history, economics and political science.  As your students work through the set, they'll build up to terms commonly used at most trade negotiation conferences and at all campaign strategy planning sessions.  Come on, just picture it.  The students in your class are at an international trade conference.  Can't you hear them saying, "Hey, this is my seat."  Another answers, "What do you mean your seat? This is my seat."  Then when handed the international agreement that has hammered out solutions to the problems of the world, one of them says, "I don't want to read this.  There are too many big words on the page."  They shouldn't have that problem with the pages in the H E P Vocabulary Set. Print is reasonably large and spaced out.  Each unit in the set gives them a vocabulary list that is taken from the H E P Glossary.  The vocabulary is covered in 5 or 6 different ways in practice exercises.  The vocabulary is used again and again throughout the series, which means it should finally register in the deep recesses of their brains  what these terms mean.  Look at it as drill work to help students master those terms in the H E P Glossary. Each unit gets more difficult as the words introduced in the first unit are included in the second unit. By the time they get to the last unit, they’ve had many of the words over and over again. In a nutshell, the aim of the H E P series is to help students develop a reading vocabulary that will carry them through their various social studies classes and give them an understanding of the words commonly found in newspapers and heard on radio and TV.

We wrote this newspaper that has articles from the past, present, and future.  In the same issue students can be reading about Kennedy's assassination, a review from a food critic traveling the Oregon Trail, the arrival of ground forces in Saigon, an ad for a trip on the Mayflower, and how one family was sentenced for violating the strict trash laws of the future.  The classified ads are looking for a troll and Washington Irving or trying to sell Hannibal's goat-skin tents.  Many of the articles and ads are written with a tongue-in-cheek attitude.  Also included are worksheets and review tests, of course.  While the articles in Read Paper  provide some imaginative and creative reading, the assignments teach about newspapers, develop vocabulary, allow the students to compare past, present and future events, encourage them to use their local newspapers, provide writing and research assignments, and give them practice in reading for detailed information on everything from the abdication of King Edward to the strict environmental laws of the future.   Please specify issue.

Though we assume your students know what the world is, we don’t assume they know what a culture is. In fact, we don’t make too many assumptions in this series except to assume the learner knows zilch about the history, politics, culture, religions, and locations of major areas of the world. The series includes information about such people as Buddha and Mohammed; however, we bypassed more current world leaders as they come and go. Please specify unit. Includes text, worksheets, tests and answer key. All are reproducible.

bullet Book 4 - 1920s through late 1970s

This series is on American history. It’s not quite the same version being taught at Harvard, but the series will expose the students to the same information they’d get out of one of those thick, hardcover books. These soft cover texts divide American history into four parts. You’ll find that for the first time since you’ve been trying to teach American history that even the slower students are actually going to be able to say, "I read an American history book." The text is laid out so that there are spaces between the lines for easier reading. All the paragraphs are numbered so that when they do the worksheets, they can more easily locate the information needed to answer the question. Specify book.

These guides are the answer to a busy schedule and contain a reading guide that will help students pronounce words beyond the 4.0 reading level. There are worksheets for reviewing, tests over every few pages, tests over chapters, activities and tons more. Please specify guide as there is  a guide for each text.
