We took what normally can be a difficult subject—science—and developed materials that teach comprehension skills such as inference, implication, and using contextual clues to determine the meaning of unknown words. The five reading passages range in length from 3 to 5 pages, and provide the material, that when used with the worksheets, help the students develop the aforementioned skills.  The kids will be reading scientific information although the intent is not to increase their knowledge in any given area of science.

Skimming is often considered a skill possessed by more sophisticated readers; however, we believe the technique of skimming is a skill worth developing in poor readers since it can take them past many of the words that they can't read. I Found the Answer! includes several reading passages and related questions to help the students develop their skimming skills. They learn how to look for details as they are skimming, as well as to look for key words in questions in order to locate an answer more quickly. The second half of this unit puts their newly-acquired skills to use by teaching how to skim for answers, write lead ins for answers, and answer questions in complete sentences.

FACT, FANCY & OPINION

Activities help to discern between facts and opinions. The "fancy" part has to do with idioms and how they are different from both facts and opinions. Includes learning unreasonable opinions that use global words, such as never, always, every, and no one.

This title in the Reading Comprehension Series helps your students discern between important and unimportant details; locate specific details; write details about a variety of subjects and then compare their details with those of other students; activities on an "eye for detail," which points out that not all people see the same details when given the same information.

Another title in the Reading Comprehension Series aims to give your students practice in following simple to somewhat more difficult directions.  This includes giving directions to a location, deleting and adding words to sentences per the directions, organizing information according to directions, and completing drawings as per directed.  Involves reading and writing and can be used as "end of the day" activities as well, as many activities can be completed in about 15 minutes or less.
